In October 2023, TimeOut Magazine named Song Wat, Bangkok, one of the world’s 40 “coolest” neighborhoods- a reference that confused even the district’s neighbors, as to that point almost nobody had ever heard of Song Wat. It had only been a matter of months since street artists, filmmakers, and musicians had descended on the alley’s abandoned buildings and began something of a revival- and once that happens, all across the world, the next steps are always the same; attention, growth, and gentrification. In this video we track Song Wat over a period of six months while it fights to retain its soul as the world takes notice.
